Issue - Water Management
  • Water is critical to human survival and clean drinking water is a rare resource.

  • Water is the heart of adaptation to climate change.

  • We do not manage our water consumption properly.

Who

People who neglect the value of clean water.

What
An interactive installation built with an Arduino controlled by an openFrameworks app using Serial.


Where
A public restrooms located in high traffic locations, such as airports.

Why
We want to have people notice the importance of moderating their use of clean water on their daily activities, by reducing their consumption when showering, cleaning, cooking, etc.

How
We are going to use a physical interaction which controls a digital component that demonstrates the gravity and sensitivity of our careless use of water.
 



Concept

The intention is to create an interactive experience which attempts to elevate the discussion of clean water consumption by demonstrating the impact of our daily usage. We will use a sink faucet as an interaction device to have the user open a water feed. The user will experience a direct demonstration of how is their consumption limiting their daily recommended amount. Once they exceed the amount the experience will show how they are taking from others water ‘allowance’.

                   





Experience

The user will be able to turn the faucet knob, ultimately having control over the flow of water. The potentiometer will detect the rotation of the knob and this will be connected to the digital screen through an Arduino microcontroller. As water drains, the user will see how much water of their daily recommended consumption is wasted. We will be making a water pump system which will allow us to measure the exact amount of water needed for our prototype.

We made a water pump system which will allow us to measure the exact amount of water needed for our prototype.
